Our Approach
When it comes to tutoring, The Sovereign Wayfarer is not a fix-it shop. If you are looking for someone to clean up your prose, correct your grammar, and hand your work back to you improved but essentially unchanged, this is not the right fit. What happens here is harder and more rewarding than that.
At the center of everything Blake does is a conviction he developed over years of working with writers at every level: that becoming a better writer is inseparable from becoming more self-aware. Writing is not merely a technical skill. It is a way of thinking, and learning to do it well means learning to manage yourself through a process that is more demanding—and more emotionally taxing—than most people expect. The frustration, the false starts, the moments of genuine confusion: these are not signs that something has gone wrong. They are signs that real learning is underway.
This means Blake works with writers, not just writing. Whether he is tutoring a high school student on essay structure, helping a college writer find and trust her voice, or working with a professional on a piece that needs to be clearer and more persuasive, his first concern is always the person behind the page. What are they actually trying to say? What is getting in the way of saying it? What habits—of thought, of language, of self-doubt—are working against them? These questions matter as much as any question about grammar or structure, and they are always part of the conversation.
Blake brings to every session a deep knowledge of how writing works at every level — from the architecture of an argument to the rhythm of a sentence — and he is not reluctant to share that knowledge directly when directness is what a writer needs. He knows the rules of writing thoroughly enough to know when to teach them, when to question them, and when to set them aside entirely. What he does not do is apply them mechanically, or mistake technical polish for good writing.
